that the variable portions of antibodies are extremely susceptible to mutation and, therefore, that the different binding sites needed to handle all the different possible antigens are created through spontaneous mutation. Diversity of binding sites is achieved both due to the fact that there are a number of different genes that code for binding sites (although not the hundreds of thousands predicted by the germline theory) and due to the fact the variable portions of antibodies are extremely prone to mutation. Lymphocytes carry exposed antibodies on their cell membranes so that, when an antigen does run into the lymphocyte capable of making the antibody to deactivate the antigen, the lymphocyte is able to bind immediately to the antigen.
